West Oaks Elementary School History and Information: West Oaks Elementary School opened in August 2004, as a relief school for Citrus Elementary. The school is nestled amongst a winding path of great oaks at 905 Dorscher Road. West Oaks Elementary served 731 students during the 2008-2009 school year including pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and an Exceptional Educational program including an Emotional Behavioral Disability unit. Current demographics indicate that we have a minority rate of 98% where 81.8% of the student enrollment is African American, 10.4% Hispanic, 1% Caucasian, and 6.8% other. Approximately 95.4% of our students are eligible for the free and reduced breakfast and lunch program and is designated as a Title I school. Finally, the approximate mobility rate for West Oaks Elementary is 40%. Beyond the fundamental core academic areas of language arts/reading, mathematics, science, and social studies, we offer an additional intervention reading block, physical education, art, computer education, media, and wellness education. West Oaks proudly serves as a feeder school for emotionally handicapped and emotionally and behaviorally disabled services for five elementary schools in the West Learning Community. In order to support all students in our community, we offer an Inclusion program for our Exceptional Education Students, English Speakers of Other Languages programs, and speech and language service. West Oaks offers a strong curriculum aligned with the district's strategic goals, the 11 Essential Outcomes of the district, the Continuous Improvement Model, and the Next Generation of the Florida Sunshine State Standards. Our highly qualified teachers and instructional coaches deliver a developmentally appropriate educational program utilizing research based curriculum. Our reading curriculum consists of Imagine It Reading Series, Imagine It e-Suites, Corrective Reading, Reading Mastery, Read Naturally, Accelerated Reader, Study Island Reading, and FCAT Explorer for Reading. Our language curriculum includes Write From the Beginning, Imagine It Reading Series and Thinking Maps. Our math curriculum consists of Scott Foresman Math, Everyday Mathematics, Study Island for Math, FCAT Explorer for Math, and FASTT Math In order to implement our rigorous curriculum through differentiated instruction, our classrooms are integrated with state-of the- art technology including audio enhancement system, document cameras, overhead mounted projectors, high speed internet access, multiple computer workstations in the classroom and 3 computer learning labs. Each computer workstation, both in the classroom and computer learning labs is integrate with Microsoft Office to assist in the successful integration of technology into the curriculum.
